Internet Safety Reflection

1. Article: Technology and a House of Learning- By Charles and Dawn Graham

2. Video: I watched several of the provided videos for this course that dealt with Cyber bullying and Cyber Predators.

3. In watching and reading the resources it made me realize just how much of our lives are run by the media. It has shown the good resources and also harmful things out there on the internet. Many of the resources such as the article I chose above and videos like Katie's Story and the PBS videos( Cyber Bullying, A Revolution in Classrooms and Social Life, and A Child Predator Fear) illustrate the need to teach kids and even adults how to be safe with the internet and look for signs of these dangers. It motivated me as a teacher and eventually a parent of the things we can do to prevent our children from accessing inappropriate and harmful media, which include keeping TVs and computers in a public area and not in rooms that can be locked behind closed doors. Technology is not anything you can escape this day and age, so rather than not letting kids on the computer we can put up filters and also direct their attention away from social networks and media that wastes time and help teach them ways to use the technology to channel creativity. Activities such as creating a presentation using a family vacation video or looking up important things in the Wikipedia encyclopedia.

4. I discussed internet safety with my younger sister. She was aware that there were filters for the internet she could use to prevent inappropriate material from being viewed on her computer. She also mentioned keeping the computer out in an open area, so as not to be secluded in a room with a door.
I then shared with her some of the resources I read and viewed and how to particularly prevent cyber predators. She is a smart girl , but she is young and I shared with her Katie's Story where she could understand that it is real and to also see the cool resources like the video game that aided Katie in becoming a victim. Even though she had heard of these happenings my sister was surprised at just how prevalent these kinds of things were out there and readily available on her computer screen. I was glad at her reaction because it helped me assess what she got out of what I was teaching her. I think she will really consider these points shared not only for herself, but with her roommates and it may even influence her eventual family.

Technology In Classroom...

My practicum experience is at Mt. Loafer Elementary in Salem, Utah. Being that this is a newer school built within the past ten years I thought that these classrooms would have a lot more access to technology, but there are still a lot of great technologies in this school. I am in the first grade and they don't use computers as often and they have a lot more rote instruction. They have technology such as an Elmo document projector and cameras that are shared as a grade level. All the classrooms have TVs, cd players, DVD players and at least one PC computer. There are two computer labs. One has newer computers and this is used to teach computer once a week to each class in the school. The other lab has older PC computers and it is open access. The computers have access to the internet and many educational programs. I think that at least in my classroom we could be using technology a lot more to make connections with the curriculum, especially since we do have a wide variety of access there at the school.
